Crude oil exposures reveal roles for intracellular calcium cycling in haddock craniofacial and cardiac development.
2016
AbstractRecent studies have shown that crude oil exposure affects cardiac development in fish by disrupting excitation-contraction (EC) coupling. We previously found that eggs of Atlantic haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) bind dispersed oil droplets, potentially leading to more profound toxic effects from uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Using lower concentrations of dispersed crude oil (0.7–7 μg/L ∑PAH), here we exposed a broader range of developmental stages over both short and prolonged durations. We quantified effects on cardiac function and morphogenesis, characterized novel craniofacial defects, and examined the expression of genes encoding potential targets underly…
Chemical Vapour Deposition of Pure Titanium Using a Heated Wire Reactor and TiI4
2017
Master's thesis Renewable Energy ENE500 - University of Agder 2017 An experimental reactor system has been optimized throughout a series of experiments for making titanium tubes from an electrically heated titanium coil filament by a chemical vapour deposition method, based on the original van Arkel-de Boer -process. The titanium is thermally decomposed on the filament from vapourized titanium tetraiodide in a method not seen in similar experiments. The small-scale reactor is built for this purpose, and the associated systems and methods are developed to maintain the optimal conditions for a continuous metal deposition. A filament current control system is made of an Arduino micro-controlle…
Analytic evaluation of the dipole Hessian matrix in coupled-cluster theory
2013
The general theory required for the calculation of analytic third energy derivatives at the coupled-cluster level of theory is presented and connected to preceding special formulations for hyperpolarizabilities and polarizability gradients. Based on our theory, we have implemented a scheme for calculating the dipole Hessian matrix in a fully analytical manner within the coupled-cluster singles and doubles approximation. The dipole Hessian matrix is the second geometrical derivative of the dipole moment and thus a third derivative of the energy. It plays a crucial role in IR spectroscopy when taking into account anharmonic effects and is also essential for computing vibrational corrections t…

The following article appeared in Journal of Chemical Physics 2015, 142 and may be found at http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4913634 We present an updated semi-experimental absolute shielding scale for the 17O and 33S nuclei. These new shielding scales are based on accurate rotational microwave data for the spin–rotation constants of H2 17O [Puzzarini et al., J. Chem. Phys. 131, 234304 (2009)], C17O [Cazzoli et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 4, 3575 (2002)], and H2 33S [Helgaker et al., J. Chem. Phys. 139, 244308 (2013)] corrected both for v…
Characterization and Evaluation of Hydrothermal Liquefaction Char from Alkali Lignin in Subcritical Temperatures.
2021
An evaluation of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) char is investigated in this work. Morphological studies, N2 adsorption behavior, FTIR analysis, thermal behavior, and elemental composition are studied. The HTL char yield showed an increase with higher operating temperatures. It increased from 11.02% to 33% when the temperature increased from 573 K to 623 K. At lower temperatures, the residence time showed an impact on the yield, while close to the critical point, residence time became less impactful. Elemental analysis showed that both higher operating temperatures and longer residence times increased the nitrogen content of the chars from 0.32% to 0.51%. FTIR analysis suggested the char b…
Preliminary photochemical studies of fluorene in various aqueous media
2014
- The current study investigates the direct photochemical degradation of aqueous fluorene with the aid of a 125W polychromatic medium, pressure Hg lamp. The purpose was to test the effectiveness of the lamp in irradiation using fluorene spiked solution as substrate. A 700 ml volume of fluorene solution of 0.002 mg/l was irradiated batch-wise at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 and 48 h. The amount of fluorene removal was studied for fluorene solutions prepared from , neutral (distilled water), acidic (by adjusting pH with hydrochloric acid, HCl), basic (by adjusting pH with sodium hydroxide, NaOH) and saline (addition of sodium chloride, NaCl) solutions and there was 95.95, 92.35, 96.65 and 97.15 % remo…
Chemistry of Desiccant Properties of Carbohydrate Polymers as Studied by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1021/ie302199k The combination frequency of water molecule in near-infrared spectroscopy is very useful for studying water molecular adsorption on solid surfaces. The absorption is purely from water molecules, and the variation in the absorption bands reflects the change in the environment of the water molecules on a surface. This variation, in turn, reflects the nature of the functional groups on the surface. Recently, Christy used this information in combination with second-derivative techniques to probe the surface of hydrothermally tre…
